What is X10Reconnect Service?

X10Reconnect is a Windows Service that monitors the Internet connectivity (ping-ing a list of servers of your choice).
Whever a dropped connection is detected, it reestablish the connection through the use of X10 devices.
The X10Reconnect Configuration program can be used to set service parameters (how often to check for connectivity, which servers to access, etc.)

Why is there need of such program?

X10Reconnect appeared from a personal need.
During last years I tried two configurations of connecting to Internet:
- Verizon DSL + DSL modem + Siemens Speedstream WiFi router
- Comcast Cable + Netgear cable modem + Netgear WiFi router
As you can see, the configurations are quite different. However, they had one thing in common: every once in a while, the connection was dropped, and nothing I did via software could bring it back. The only thing that reestablished my connection was to power down the cable/dsl modem, and sometimes even the WiFi router.
I needed a way to reestablish via software the Internet connection and bring my web server back online, and this is how X10Reconnect was born.
There may be other cheaper alternatives than X10 devices, but as I have a couple of these in my home I thought I could use them.

Requirements

X10Reconnect Service runs on Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server.
You'll also need some X10 devices to use the service, see list below.

What X10 devices and software do I need?

You'll need the following X10 devices:

• ActiveHome Pro CM15A Transceiver and Computer Interface (~50$)
• Any X10 appliance module e.g. AM466, AM486, etc. (~13$)
You can also donwload ActiveHome Pro SDK if you want to do your own X10 programming.

I downloaded the installer but I cannot execute it. What's wrong?

You might need to install Microsoft® Windows® Installer. Download version 2.0 from Microsoft's web site:
• Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable for Windows 95, 98, and ME
• Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable for Windows 2000 and NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6
• Windows XP contains Windows Installer 2.0. If you have Windows XP there is no need to download this redistributable.

Are the program sources provided?

X10Reconnect Service is written and distributed under GNU General Public License which means that its source code is freely-distributed and available to the general public. The Setup program gives you the option to install sources if you wish so.
